Yard questions, answered
How often should I mow my lawn in the Augusta heat?
Most warm-season lawns common in the CSRA, Bermuda, centipede and zoysia, do best cut every 5 to 10 days once the growing season's in full swing, more often after a good rain, less when it's dry. Taking off more than about a third of the blade length in one pass stresses the grass.
Why does my lawn get patchy or yellow in late summer?
Usually uneven watering, compacted clay soil, or a spot the sprinkler isn't quite reaching. Grubs and heavy foot traffic can do it too. Fixing the water pattern and aerating solves most cases.
When's the best time to put in new sod around here?
Warm-season sod roots in fastest during late spring through midsummer, once the soil's warmed up. Cooler months work too, but the grass takes longer to establish.
Should I aerate my lawn in Georgia's clay soil?
If water pools on the surface instead of soaking in, or the ground feels hard as a sidewalk, it's worth doing, typically once a year.
